His accountant says it’s all a matter of bad timing. Duane “Dog” Chapman is the owner of Dakine Bail Bonds in Honolulu, but is more well-known as the star of the A&E reality show, “Dog and the Bounty Hunter.”
According to tax liens filed at the Hawaii Bureau of Conveyances filed January 27, Chapman owes $2 million in unpaid taxes that go back as far as 2002. Not that he hasn’t had his share of tax woes before… the IRS has been hounding him for years over various tax concerns, including tax liens that were filed for income earned in 1993 and 1994, and a previous lien in 2004, all of which are cleared up.

The latest round of liens shows the following unpaid tax liabilities on income earned in

2002 –- $106,553

2003 — $99,235

2004 — $283,514

2005 — $1,560,000

Or… as tmz.com put it, the equivalent of 750,000 cans of Alpo.

Chapman’s accountant, Dennis Duban of Los Angeles, says that all of these tax payments were made, though not on a timely basis. They were made at the last minute, and he adds, there is usually a six-week time lag between making the payments and getting the liens released. Duban adds that he’s been trying to contact the IRS to clear up the fact that the amounts due were paid. He also acknowledges that his client owes taxes for more recent years.

“We show that he owes taxes for ’06 and ’07 but ’02 to ’05 was completely paid,” he told reporters. “We’re trying to catch up on the old years and to stay current.”

TV bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman owes more than $2 million in unpaid taxes, Pacific Business News reported.

The Internal Revenue Service has filed tax liens that were recorded with the state Bureau of Conveyances on Jan. 27, alleging Chapman owed the IRS the unpaid taxes dating back to 2002, according to PBN.

Chapman owes $106,553 on 2002 income, $99,235 for 2003, $283,514 for 2004 and $1.56 million in 2005, according to PBN. Dennis Duban, identified as Chapman’s Los Angeles-based accountant, told the Honolulu business publication that Chapman says most of the taxes have been paid.

Duban told PBN that Chapman owes taxes for 2006 and 2007, but has paid taxes owed from 2002 to 2005. Duban told PBN that there often is a lag between the time the IRS receives the payment and when the liens are released.

Mona Wood, a spokeswoman for Chapman, would not comment when contacted by The Advertiser.

In the past, the IRS filed liens against Chapman for unpaid income in 1993 and 1994, according to PBN.

Dog’ Chapman hit with $2M in tax liens

Bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman owes the Internal Revenue Service more than $2 million in unpaid taxes dating back to 2002, according to tax liens filed at the Hawaii Bureau of Conveyances.

The liens recorded Jan. 27 represent the latest tax troubles for the Honolulu bail bondsman and celebrity bounty hunter, who has been haggling with the IRS for years over tax bills.

Chapman owns Da Kine Bail Bonds on Queen Emma Street in downtown Honolulu and stars in the A&E reality show “Dog the Bounty Hunter.”

According to the latest liens, Chapman owes $106,553 on 2002 income, $99,235 for 2003, $283,514 for 2004 and $1.56 million on income earned in 2005.

Chapman’s Los Angeles-based accountant, Dennis Duban, said Friday that as far as he knew most of the taxes had been paid and that he had been attempting to get in touch with the IRS.

“We show that he owes taxes for ’06 and ’07 but ’02 to ’05 was completely paid,” Duban said, acknowledging that some tax payments were made at the “last minute” and that there’s typically a six-week lag between the time the IRS receives payment and liens are released.

“We’re trying to catch up on the old years and to stay current,” Duban said. Referring to Chapman and his wife, Beth, he said: “I just feel badly for them having to deal with this.”

The IRS filed liens against Chapman in 2006 for almost $200,000 in 2004 income but in early 2007 Duban said those tax bills had been paid. The IRS had previously filed liens against him for unpaid 1993 and 1994 income.
